Lost-Psyren's News

Posted by Lost-Psyren - 1 month ago

Hello everyone,

Things are very busy still and I'm feeling down, but I've gotten some encouragement and am still going.

I have art in progress/completed that can't be posted yet as they're zine related. So far:

A BSKY-appreciation zine in preorder phase (+ bonus). It's a very small casual thing, if you want to join its accepting submissions until May 14th.

The others are in creation/TDA.

I hope you can enjoy them when they release!

The Language Studies post is being tweaked here and there. I'm hoping to find more options for English German and French, as well as add sections e.g. Slavic languages and especially endangered languages. I'm aiming for low cost/free alternatives and dodging tools that basically rely on AI generating the content/answers with no checks.

Glaze has a 2.1 update to combat a new attack. If you have not updated, please consider doing so.

Several JP artists were commenting how tools like Grok are editing their art, as well as thieves taking WIPs from streams to generate new images. Those posts made me consider doing my own tests to see how AI handles different techniques in replication/text removal and find the best solution for protection. A real-time glaze project would be funny but I believe the process is already so intensive that its unrealistic. I'm not code savvy but it might be a cool project.

A few friends asked me about commissions. As of right now I don't think my quality is consistent nor on par with the general market of NGS and other sites. I'm open to the idea but I'd rather improve more and get other opinions. I have a very small following so general feedback is scarce.

Several plans have been affected by the trade war and uh, lets call it, government shenanigans within the US. If you know me, I was hoping to create a small charm shop in the future, but that idea is on hold due to supply-chain problems and other uncertainty. Normally I'd just have to wonder if anyone would buy it... (ó﹏ò。)

I'm very, very tired. But thank you again for the support.

I have no doubt a model could be trained on me, but I feel like my current style(s) are very... Unappealing?

I am working on it, but my roughness in lines, color, composition (& skill/style inconsistency) I think makes my work commercially unviable and likely unappealing to generators. That and I tend to work to my own satisfaction first.

The number of errors/oddities in generated images proves the point that you don't have to have perfect anatomy or understanding of color theory or masterful techniques to capture an audience. The little details you put in and the slightest correction to enhance the work isn't necessary to the average person. They won't notice. It might be depressing but it's very liberating.

Like a manga once said (can't remember the name) "You don't have to be good at art, you just need to convince the audience you're good," because the only people who are likely going to recognize your skill and appreciate your effort are other artists.

So I try not to stress so much over how well I'm doing, if other people like what I'm doing, is this good enough, if I have "AI artstyle"... I just want to create things peacefully.

Edit July'24: Added additional resources, spelling fixes. Added "Improvement" section.
Nov'24: more corrections, added information
Feb'25: Added suggestions
May'25: More advice, added section just for lewd art...

This is in no way a guideline on how to be scouted quickly nor an official guide for scouting talent. This is just to categorize my own thoughts/suggestions.

I am not a moderator and a mod's ruling will take precedence.

"Whats scouting?"

Newgrounds Wiki - Scouting - Also read the help pages if you haven't.

Ornery's Handy Dandy Scouting Guide - Straight from an art mod. Chances are your questions may be answered here.

Scouting is defined in the wiki as a form of quality control. Effectively, this means that the curation of the Art/Audio portals (and to some extent moderation) is left to the userbase of Newgrounds. This has the effect of having no centralized or consistent measure to what is "good" enough for Approved Artists and what stays in Undiscovered, since it's quite literally up to any random person with prior approval.

Generally, I think this is good because it creates a higher probability of diverse art styles and skill levels appearing in the general portal while filtering out spam/bots/rule-breaking/etc. works. Seriously, imagine how boring if the only art that's in the portal is anime-art with huge eyes, or the most surreal hand-painted illustrations you'd never understand. Or the Audio portal being only full of basic beats and diss-tracks. Diversity makes the portal interesting!

That being said, there are absolutely downsides to the system. Friends can scout each other, bots getting control, or, ironically, lack of quality control. There are users who scout only one or two people, and users who like to scout well into the hundreds. Those mass-scouts can be a problem when authors are scouted with little to no scrutiny or manage to miss long-time users. Heck, apparently a few people use Newgrounds for years without being approved.

"So how would you fix the system?"

I wouldn't. I think right now, the system does what it needs to. Can it be abused? Certainly, but I think there are also enough users who use it in good faith and genuinely care about the ecosystem of Newgrounds.

To scout someone means "[you] have vouched for the quality of [another's] work." This is important because if someone who was scouted goes on to break the rules or post low-quality/spam to the portal, not only are they punished but so is the person who had scouted them. Conversely, if you end up getting punished for something then any scouts you've made could be revoked and the authors set on cool down. Basically, scouting someone else is you taking responsibility for their posts' quality on the portal(s).

*Think of it as NG saying "Whoa, my guy. Are you sure?" so you're careful about who you scout.

"Blah blah. I found a cool guy, I wanna scout them!"

Wonderful! Should you scout them?

Has the author posted a work that break the art or audio guidelines respectively? Is there more than one? (Remember to report violations.) The report categories are below:

iu_1240158_13211960.png

General rule is if someone does not have the care to correctly post according to site standards then they probably won't care for the portal's health either.

Do you genuinely think this person is posting quality work? What does quality mean to you? Is it technical ability? Creativity? Does their work make you feel something?

Does their work appear to have been made with effort? Does it heavily rely on presets/bases?

Does the artist have a basic understanding of fundamentals (anatomy, color, shading, etc. or Basic music theory)?

Beware: If you scout someone who doesn't meet NG standards, then your permission may be revoked AND users you've previously scouted, regardless of eligibility, will be de-scouted and need a mod to reverse it.

"I found someone to scout but I don't know if I should..."

If there's something that makes you hesitate, there's usually some reason for it.

Perhaps the user hasn't posted much at all, or their profile is blank. Do they have other socials where you can easily see their other work? Does it fit the quality of Newgrounds? I would normally suggest waiting until they post more before you give them approval.

Do their socials link back to New Grounds? Once in a while, impersonators create accounts. An easy way to confirm a real account is to see if the artist adds their NGs profile to their other socials or mentions it on another site. This is especially important for famous artists!

Is there nepotism? I appreciate wanting to help friends/authors you admire, but make sure you don't approve them only because you like them. Is that fair to the site?

Is the author begging for scouts? Do not scout beggars even if they're good as it will encourage more begging (+ it's bad etiquette!)

Maybe you think their work is inconsistent. Is there a reasonable explanation for this?

Do they post infrequently? Are they reuploading older work out of order? Are they experimenting? Usually works will have some general progression of improvement or stylistic choices. Would you be able to tell the same artist made them?

If you think they might be posting AI works, carefully consider it before you report them. AI accusations are free to throw but costly to the receiver. They shouldn't be made lightly.

Is the author transparent about AI use? Does the amount of AI violate the guidelines? What makes you think it's AI (e.g. bad fundamentals, repetitive, inconsistent lighting, distortions/disappearing objects, etc.?) The more you observe AI works the more problems appear. That being said, be careful because everyone— esp. newer artists/musicians— can make mistakes.

"Uh, maybe I shouldn't scout them..."

That's perfectly fine. Just because the user isn't meeting the site standards now doesn't mean they won't later.

Consider reviewing their work and leaving constructive feedback. What do you like about their work? What if they do well? What do you think could be improved?

If you like their vibes maybe follow them so you can see their uploads more often. If their vibes are off, check their other work/socials?

Remember the guidelines have officially asked NSFW/adult works should be graded to a "higher standard."

"Hey wait! I'm an author and I haven't been scouted yet!"

Oops. Well, have you uploaded anything yet?

Does your work lack fundamentals? Consider your current skill level and what's on the approved portal. Does your work hold up to scrutiny, as suggested by this post?

... You've actually read the guidelines and aren't wasting anyone's time, right? You haven't been begging for scouts, either?

Have you rated your work correctly?

While ratings are somewhat subjective, please do you best to follow the rating system. This protects the community (minors, people with sensitivities, and people from countries that restrict porn access this site!) and owners/moderators + is generally good manners!

For Art:

The Guidelines have as basic overview of Rating.

My rule of thumb is if an art is meant to titillate/sexually arouse, it can't be E.

If you have multiple images in one submission, you can adjust the individual ratings: click the three dots, chose Options and uncheck "Use project default". This is good if one pic is too saucy for the project rating!

iu_1392762_13211960.png

iu_1392763_13211960.png

Note that work also has to be rated on vibe/intended audience: Your submission might technically count at one rating, but others can argue differently. If the art is E but the thumbnail is butts and boobs, your thumbnail is saying it's for more mature audiences. Descriptions should also match your rating!

Suggestive text/poses/facial expressions or situations and overly defined or emphasized breast/butt/private areas bump up the rating.

If your art is toeing a line, it's safer to rate higher!

Guidelines also ask that censored porn must be rated A and that fetish art needs to be tagged with the appropriate fetish.

For Audio:

The guidelines don't explain the rating system, but the basic idea is the same as the art portal:

Nothing suggestive should be in the E rating.

Mild explicit language goes in T.

Heavily mature themes, language goes in M

Work intended for adults only or straight up porn audio goes in A.

Frequently mis-rating risks being de-scouted!

There's a whole number of reasons you could have not been scouted that I can't tell you. Maybe you're just unlucky or really new. Be patient, keep posting and continuing improving your crafts. Eventually you'll be approved and get on the portal.

"But how do I get better?"

Consider your mindset and goals. Why do you draw? Are you drawing to become a professional, or other reasons? What style do you want? How hard are you willing to work? It's important to have a sense of what you want out of your craft so you can set the right pace and objectives for yourself.

Read Yatsufusa's Guides, Tutorials & Other Help, that has lots of tutorials from around the community. You can choose what to look at and it will save you a lot of time. If that's not enough, there are many other (free) resources you can use to help yourself if you look.

Practice fundamentals! Art is not a medium of rules, but basic principles that combine to create fundamentals we use to express ideas. When we understand these principles, then we can properly learn rules that create style.

For visual artists. this would be line, shape, color, value, contrast, form, space, and so on.

For audio artists this would be timbre, frequency, balance, etc.

Music artists would also learn Music Theory and why scales, intervals are used to create certain vibes or why x sounds pleasant.

Let yourself be open and read (constructive) reviews! Feedback can tell you a lot about what the audience likes, mistakes and corrections, etc. Also read other artist's reviews. Getting perspective about others can let you reflect on yourself.

Consider trying a master study. Master studies are replicas students make of famous or professional work to get a better understanding of their current skill level, why masters make certain artistic decisions, and how to be closer stylistically. Master studies are best used be those who have a higher grasp on fundamentals and would likely be confusing otherwise. (I.e. can you effectively use something if you don't know why it's there/how it does that?)

(Exu Lann)

"No matter how you hide, I know how you feel inside."

My oc, Exu Lann the "Somber Spring". A minor spirit who helps grieving people, particularly those who feel isolated by their happy surroundings.

She was made a long time ago, but her backstory and personality is underdeveloped.

Exu was born on the last day of winter right as the frosts melted into the rivers and the first blooms grew. The latent energy in the environment transformed the spirit of a rabbit to the rabbit-lady here.

iu_850124_13211960.webpiu_850125_13211960.webp

She likes wear sheer clothing and has more chic tastes. It was also an excuse to design fashion I normally don't.

The other socials are slowly being updated. For now Itaku is the most update as a gallery/portfolio and Cohost is the least, I'm attempting to get everything even eventually. The exception is ArtStation; I've 'froze' it due to concerns around their policies and slow response to user feedback, mostly around AI. The frequent scam messages don't help.

I haven't decided if Dreamwidth or Cohost will be a new "main" social hub. Who knows.

The carrd is being maintained with relevant information though I'm keeping a more de-personalized presence. Please use discretion when exploring websites, some may contain shocking or 18+ content.

Thank you to new and older fans for your support, I'll continue my projects and eventually create something new and better!

(Denée)

She who judges

Denée, a character made for a campaign. They are a mysterious being from another world that suddenly gained consciousness. They take on the appearance of a porcelain doll.

"A sentient doll of unknown origin. Though they have existed for a time, they only appeared before the main party around the time of reemergence of the Mirage Coast. Just what does a doll have to do with the hotel, and why does it have a persona?

"A large porcelain doll with pale skin, a small nose and mouth, black hair, and dark grey eyes. An eye-patch covers the left eye. The long hair rests over-the-shoulder and curls towards the ends. Medium-cut bangs hang on the forehead with a bundle framing the right cheek, and on the left side of the head the hair is braided around the back of the head to the over side, underneath the weaves of hair. A strange earpiece with gold ornamentation is on the left ear."

iu_850120_13211960.webp

(The fashion was to reflect the international culture and wealth passing through the campaign's main area. Red, blue, and yellow are the "toy colors" coined by Persona series artist Soejima Shigenori.)

Denée was made to act as a mascot character to match modern Persona games, but more twisted. Instead of wishing to become human, they're already Human-shaped enough to pretend while still being alien. Denée is large enough to pass as a human child, which is both convenient and frustrating to her.

"On the upper-arms just below the shoulders are white puffs of the under-shirt. Tied underneath are long black fanning-sleeves ending in white ruffles. The insides are also white. Over the legs are white tights, shear enough that one could see Denée's joints if they look very closely. They are two kitten-heel Mary-Janes on the feet. Black ribbons tie around the ankles and make little bows at the back. The ensemble makes an almost Victorian-English & German Gothic–inspired maid, if exaggerating-ly cute. It's best described as Lolita Fashion."

The head gives a stylish "off-balance" kind of look. Most of the hair rests on and frames the right side of the face, while the left is open and bare. There's a small braid further tying it to the side.

The bangs cover most of the eyebrows, which naturally gives a harsher appearance since eyebrows are a main way of emotional expression. This is "hiding from others" as much as it can be "hiding from oneself." The sliver of -brow visible is like peaking from a curtain.

The earpiece is ornamented and large, wrapping ~ halfway across the head before breaking. It looks prominent but no longer usable, and links Denée to the campaign's monsters. The eye-patch covers a large hole revealing Denée's real body. Together with the earpiece, it points to a separate direction than the hair.

iu_850122_13211960.webp

"Calm, poised, and in control of them-self, if not others. Denée is an aloof figure content to simply observe everything around it. They have a tendency to speak somewhat dismissively and their advice can only seem to come off as abrasive. To Denée, knowledge is earned but wisdom can be freely given; it's up to the audience to determine the answer after experiencing the ultimate lesson. It's by this policy any help is given at their leisure, whether through hints, questions or insults. Emotionally reserved, they're best described as a poker player. Except they consider them-self the house, and attempt to keep everything in their favor.

They have other-worldly power, the simplest being levitation and some connection to Amenthes, The Other-Side. What else could they posses?"

Their personality can be described as an esoteric person stepping into the world for the first time; their language is sophisticated and prideful yet they have little-to-no knowledge of social interaction, and underestimates the danger of the reality they exist within. As an entity from a separate world, they think of human customs as confusing or pointless. They have no sex or real concept of gender; the form is simply what they became when they began developing a conscious and separated from their Mind-hive. You could use any pronoun to refer to Denée, as long as they think you are being respectful.

Denée's concept keywords are mascot, mystery, misdirection, rejection, outcast, identity.

The form you see is not their original body, and because they have become their own person they have become foriegn to the ecosystem they once easily traversed, like a cell that has suddenly become cancerous. The entities, or "Jurors" they were apart of no longer recognize them as an ally and attack on sight. Denée works with their human companions out of convenience and a hidden sense of fear, only to eventually admire and evolve from contact with the humans they looked down on.

Their character and backstory were meant to reveal itself and reshape as the campaign's lore and story progressed. However the campaign is currently on indefinite hiatus, and so Denée's character hasn't been expanded since.

Sub section: Persona

"A nude woman lounging in a pond with a gentle eyes and flirtatious smirk. Her long wispy hair hangs down her back and hips, dipping into the water. Her elbows rest on a skull as she plays with her hair. Behind her are skeletal arms rising out the water, as if reaching out. The hair curls around and entangles the bones, controlling their movements. A lone butterfly flutters over her head.

"The pond itself is small, fading out on the edges where a few lotuses and lilies grow. The closer the water is to the woman's body, the more the water fades into a purple hue. "

iu_850121_13211960.webp

Compendium description: "Mythological beings of Slavic lore. Rusalki are beautiful nature spirits comparable to mermaids or sirens; they dwell in or near bodies of water, seducing men that come near before ensnaring their victims in their hair and drowning them. There are many rumors about Rusalka, ranging from being the vengeful spirits of abused maidens, to benevolent fertility goddesses. Even their hair color and living places vary.

"Rusalka Week in early June is believed to be the time when Rusalki activity rises and they leave the depths to swing on tree branches. Swimming is forbidden during this time, lest someone falls to Rusalka."

An ice persona of the Empress arcana, and base persona of Denée.

The characters were requested to be outcasts; in this theme, the personas were based on a famous anti-hero, anti-villain, or otherwise morally complex fictional, historical, or mythological figures. I chose Rusalka because it's one of my favorite mythological creatures and I one think is lesser known. Rusalki has various perceptions and lore depending on the region- they might be a merciful nature deities, or violent spirits drowning men or anyone who gets in their realm. The mixed, often conflicting lore makes Rusalka hard to understand. Rusalka as a persona is either an identity crisis or an acceptance of being two-faced.

The many regional variants of folklore were composited into a design I'm both happy with and I think might look like an official ATLUS design. Rusulka also lends to Denée being "mass-produced".

The following are some unused concepts

iu_850123_13211960.webp

While all designs were supposed to have an overt feminine charm, I tried to reconcile Rusalka's conflicted nature. I played with the idea of water hair for supernatural effect. This had problems in how I'd render or illustrate it in an appealing way. At one point I considered trying a route with Rusalka as a wind spirit (I believe there is at least one lore like this) with exposed skeleton feet/parts, to bring in the "death" aspect. Most of the designs I think leaned too harshly into the "benevolent god" side, except for the "fish-lure" design that was too far away from the base. I also didn't want Rusalka to feel too unnatural as most depictions were as regular-looking humans. I feel the final design balances "human/non-human" and "Life/death" aspects much better.
